Biology: Breeding IMPLICATIONS OF INBREEDING COEFFICIENT AND COANCESTRY IN A SUGARCANE BREEDING PROGRAM
نویسنده
چکیده
Inbreeding coefficients and coancestry were used to investigate the genetic base in the Taiwan sugarcane breeding program. Six of the potentially most important ROC varieties in Taiwan were studied. Four ROC varieties had inbreeding coefficients. The largest inbreeding coefficient was found in ROClO (0.281), followed by ROC9 (0.156). Since ROC9 and ROClO are currently the leading cane varieties in Taiwan, the expected homozygosity of the variety appears to have no adverse effect. The coancestry indicates that 4 pairs of ROC varieties are related as half sibs, 9 are uncle-nephew, and only 2 pairs have a more distant relationship. The genetic relationship as a function of coancestry and the inbreeding coefficient was also estimated. Six ROC varieties have additive and epistasis relationshrps with one another, and among four varieties, there are dominance relationships. The genetic base in the Taiwan sugarcane breeding programs is restricted to a few common resources such as F146 and F152. Therefore a latent crisis was noted: All ROC varieties as parents failed to regenerate new ROC varieties, except ROC5. These results support the continuous need to introduce new genetic resources into a sugarcane breeding program.

Estimation of effective population size from the rate of coancestry in pedigreed populations.
We introduce a simple method to estimate effective population size from increase in coancestry (Δc(jk)) for all pairs of individuals j and k in a reference subpopulation. An increase in pairwise coancestry for any pair of individuals j and k can be defined assuming that a hypothetical mating between them would give an individual with an inbreeding coefficient equal to c(jk), where c(jk) is the ...

At the Wageningen Laboratory of Plant Breeding, a software package has been developed to query a simple structured database with variety pedigree data. The package, called Peditree, creates a tree-shaped representation of pedigree information and has several visualization and lookup options. Estimates of inbreeding coefficient within a pedigree or coefficients of coancestry among pedigrees can ...
متن کاملCoCoa: a software tool for estimating the coefficient of coancestry from multilocus genotype data
MOTIVATION Phenotypic data collected in breeding programs and marker-trait association studies are often analyzed by means of linear mixed models. In these models, the covariance between the genetic background effects of all genotypes under study is modeled by means of pairwise coefficients of coancestry. Several marker-based coancestry estimation procedures allow to estimate this covariance ma...
متن کاملPopulation structure of the Trakehner Horse breed.
The objective of this study was to examine the population structure of the Trakehner Horse breed. A total of 13 793 pedigree records were used for analysing the active breeding population and their ancestors dating back to 1950. Ancestors that were born before 1950 were called as base animals. The average generation interval was calculated as 10.2 years. The effective population size (Ne) was e...

Pedigree information which collected from 1979 to 2012 were used to study the genetic variability and population structure of Raeini Cashmere goat, taking kids born from 2009 to 2012 into account as reference population. Averages of inbreeding coefficients in whole and inbred populations were computed to be 0.04% and 4.41%, respectively. Considering the reference population, average inbreeding ...
